JPEG 2000 Video Codec

The JPEG 2000 standard was developed as a successor to the aging JPEG standard. The new compression method provides a number of improvements and features that make it stand apart from most other video and image compression standards, and show it to be superior for security, surveillance, and mobile applications.
  • Robust: Can withstand significant damage to the codestream, and still decompress properly.
  • Low latency: Usually one or two frame time latency from source to end point display, with no loss in compression efficiency.
  • Multi-resolutional compression: A single compressed data stream can provide video to devices at different bandwidths simultaneously, without adding to processing requirements at all.
  • Efficient: Uses less power, memory and processing resources to compress a stream than other current methods.
  • High Performance: When compressing images to the same quality, uses 1/2 to 1/5 the data size when compared to original JPEG, MPEG-2. At multi-megapixel resolutions, it has unmatched efficiency.
These characteristics make JPEG 2000 very effective in situations such as:
  • Mobile video transmission - The robust codestream allows consistent video over inconsistent data links, high performance requires a smaller video bandwidth, and low power requirement makes it excellent for battery limited systems.
  • High performance live surveillance - The low latency means live streams are being presented in real time with no loss of efficiency, high performance means multi-megapixel network cameras can be used for surveillance, without using too much power.
  • Scalable video recording - The reliability of having static frames for stringent evidentiary rules, coupled with multiresolutional content, provides aging capabilities to a recorded video database enabling staged video storage for years rather than days, without sacrificing live video image quality or latency.
